Lot 81

This is a Revolutionary War, George the III period document for the sale of land in Farmington, Connecticut by Charles Thorp to Zachariah Hitchcock, for 20 pounds of Lawful English money. An exceptional embossed Revenue Stamp with the words, Honi Soit qu mal y pense (French for Shame to him who thinks evil of it) can be seen when held up to the light. The document was drafted in 1775 and was entered into record in 1776. Zachariah Hitchcock, who purchased the land in this deed, enlisted in the Continental Army on June 4, 1776. He served in the 10th North Carolina Regiment under command of Capt. Abraham Sheppard, which was part of The Marquis de Lafayettes Brigade. They marched into Valley Forge in May 1778 and Hitchcock would have been among them. In 1780, however, Hitchcock became a deserter! He died in 1819, at the age of 77. Jared Lee, who drafted the document, was a Deacon in the Congregational Church. He also served as the Justice of the Peace and was well-known at the time for his important service to the county.
