Description:

John Boyle, 5th Earl of Cork and 5th Earl of Orrery, FRS (13 January 1707 – 16 November 1762) was a writer and a friend of Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope and Samuel Johnson. He was married twice, first to Henrietta, daughter of George Hamilton, Earl of Orkney and his wife Elizabeth Hamilton, née Villiers.[2] His eldest son, Charles Boyle, Viscount Dungarvan, predeceased him and he was succeeded as Earl of Cork by his younger son Hamilton, who died in 1764 and passed the earldom to John's next son, Edmund. Elizabeth (b.1731), one of his daughters by his first wife, married Sir Thomas Worsley, 6th Baronet, and one of their children was Sir Richard Worsley, 7th Baronet. His second wife was Margaret Hamilton, daughter of John Hamilton of Caledon and Lucy Dopping. She owned considerable estates in Ulster. Their daughter Lucy (b.1744) married George Byng, 4th Viscount Torrington. Henry Hoare II (1705–1785), known as Henry the Magnificent, was an English banker and garden owner-designer. Henry dominated the Hoare family through his wealth and personal charisma. He was a partner for nearly 60 years in Hoare's Bank. His nickname, "Henry The Magnificent", derived in part from his influence as a great patron of the Arts, but more particularly because he laid out the gardens at Stourhead in Wiltshire, an estate bought by his father. In the thirty years after his mother died in 1741, he worked on the gardens at Stourhead, planning and planting what became a "masterpiece" of European garden design. In the 'school' of Poussin, it was said to be "more beautiful than any landscape put on canvas". The gardens were admired as a showplace and Capability Brown, the renowned landscape gardener, was well known to Henry. In 1734 he was elected Member of Parliament for Salisbury.
