Description:

Published by G. P. Putnam's Sons, The Knickerbocker Press (1906), New York, 1906. The designs of Margaret Armstrong (1867-1944), utilizing the Art Nouveau style and floral patterns, were a sensation in the publishing business; Armstrong created over 270 book designs, often for the works of well-known authors such as Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, and George Washington Cable. "The Last Ride Together" was printed in several versions, this printed on Japanese vellum paper in the green cloth, the flowers simply embossed. The overall design is striking, a wonderful example of Art Nouveau work in book form. Robert Browning leaves us wondering what he meant by the "last" ride - the final ride, never to see each other again? Or the most recent ride, with the hope of more to come? The Lover has found his meaning being with his mistress, which Robert found with his beloved wife, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Beveled boards bound in vertically ribbed dark green cloth, decoration in blind-stamping and gilt on both front and spine, lettering on front and spine in gilt, all edges gilt, endpapers of gray with red decoration by Margaret Armstrong (unsigned), half-title in black with brown decorative border, frontispiece and five other illustrations by Frederick Simpson Coburn, each with a lettered tissue guard, title page in brown upon a green decorative background by Margaret Armstrong (unsigned). printed on Japan vellum with each page printed on the recto only, separately hinged, and each page having both a small illustration at the top most in two colours, as well as a hand-coloured decorative border, final page is a vignette of the lovers kissing, each astride their horse, "The End" on ribbon banner beneath; duodecimo size (approximately 7.5" tall), unpaginated with 24 leaves. The book is illustrated by woodcut vignettes and five full page illustrations by Frederick Simpson Coburn.
